The Minister of Information and Communications, Dora Akunyili has said that the government is committed in ensuring that the best core bidder gets the license of NITEL.
Akunyili said this at the weekend in Lagos, during a Media Luncheon.
She said that NITEL is the country's national legacy while adding that there is need to sell it to a competent bidder that would resuscitate its lost glories.
The Minister noted that the telecoms company was worth about $600 million but that the country should get the value above that worth.
She stated that the Bureau for Public Enterprise (BPE) is in-charge of the bidding processes but that the Federal Government is working with the enterprise to ensure a proper and better process.
In another development, the Minister said that she is of the view that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) should be merged.
Akunyili noted that this was necessary since the functions of NCC and that of NBC are interwoven.
She added that it would have taken place for a long time but that it is a legislative issue and would take some time for it to be actualised.
``It is desirable because their functions are overlapping,'' she said.
