The Head of Nokia Care, Silvin Sinan, has stated that patronizing counterfeit phones would consitute environmental health hazards due to substandard materials used in production and thus urged customers to patronize genuine Nokia products from its various outlets in the country.
He added that as a result, the user would not have the benefits attached with buying a genuine product such as, lack of warranty in the event of damage, and limited services amongst others.
According to Sinan,” the lure of cheap prizes amounts to being penny wise pound fooloish as the so-called cheap devices have a shorter lifespan. He listed the value-added services availale on genuine nokia devices to include services like the Ovi Life Tools which enables Nigerians to get updated information on their health, sports/entertainment, agriculture as well as exam tips. He said Nokia is also able to reduce the cost of internet access on their phones through strategic partnership with operators”
On how unsuspecting consumers can identify counterfeit devices, Sinan explained that all the buyer needs to do is send an SMS of the IMEI number, (which is available on the phone package) to 32053. The buyer will then receive an SMS that the phone has a 12-month Nigeria-warranty.
According to Sinan, non-receipt of this sms is evidence that the phone being purchased is probably a counterfeit device. This new system now offers Nokia faithfuls an easier way to determine if their phone has a valid warranty.
The nokia warranty warranty starts from the date of purchase and it guarantees the user of repair at no cost and even replacement in the event of malfunction.
Sinan stated that feedbacks are collected from users in other to meet the demands of its customers and knowing how best to serve its users.
Journalists were also taken to one of the Nokia Care centres in Lagos where Nokia phones are repaired. The media tour is part of activities designed by Nokia in a campaign tagged “Be Original, Buy Original”. The menace of counterfeiting transcends the mobile industry to pharmaceuticals, textiles and the music industry.
It recently launched the Nokia E7, which is considered one of the smartest phones on the Nokia stable. To promote its new positioning as a solutions and internet company, the current promotion gives free one month internet on the device to anyone that purchases its range of products, such as Nokia N8, C7, E5, C6 and E72.
The new Nokia global market strategy also aims at connecting the next one billion people to the internet via mobile devices. To this end Nokia recently announced a strategic partnership with Microsoft, which will see it adopting windows as the operating system for its smartphones.
Nokia’s Head of marketing in charge of West Africa, Onwubiko, said that the promotion was also part of efforts to reward the loyalty of its customers whose patronage has helped in sustaining Nokia as a leader in the mobile phone market. The Nokia Marketing chief also disclosed that those who purchase the new Nokia C3 will be given a free pouch.
