Just at the eve of Christmas, the GTBank ATM machines, Internet banking, and POS suddenly went down nation wide as a result of a centralized data center that caught fire.
The data center which is located at Ademola Tokunbo, Victoria Island, Lagos, was surrounded with fire fighters and customers who are in need of cash.
At one of the branches in Lagos, the customers expressed their deep disappointments being when they needed cash more urgently.
One of the customers named Tunde, expressed his grievances and said "how could a bank as big as GTBank not have back-up data center in cases of emergencies as such? There should be automatic fail-over to backup there data center without there customers knowing."
One other customer named Rose said " I have been waiting over 6 hours now. I am completely stranded. I need to travel tomorrow for an important meeting ."
The IT unit according to a source said, the bank is working on it to restore the situation.
In trying to reach its valued customers, the bank posted a statement on its Facebook page which stated that " we regret to inform you that our e-channel (ATM's, Internet banking and POS) are temporarily unavailable. This is due to a fire incident at our data processing center. The situation is presently under control and we expect to restore access to these channels shortly. We apologize for any inconveniences. Thank you! "
