Nokia has announced the new brand HERE for its map and location services, as part of efforts to expand the services beyond its own devices. Under the HERE brand, the company is launching a maps application for iOS devices.
The App which is based on HTML5 will include offline capabilities, voice-guided walk navigation, and public transport directions.
Nokia also announced partnership with Mozilla to bring location services to the upcoming Firefox OS. A mobile web version of HERE Maps for the Firefox OS would debut next year and available for free download from Apple's App Store in the coming weeks.
The global brand also demonstrated an Android OS-based reference application and announced plans for the launch of a HERE SDK for Android OEMs in early 2013. This will help developers create apps for Android with Nokia's location content.
With the planned acquisition of California Company Earthmine before the end of 2012, Nokia seeks to enhance HERE's 3D map-making capabilities, which currently runs on Lumia phones to create an augmented reality view of the world.
